Xavier’s Edmond Sumner stretchered off after fall against Villanova
Xavier point guard Edmond Sumner was stretchered off the court Thursday after a hard fall early in the Musketeers’ game against Villanova.
While driving to the basket in the first few minutes of the game, Sumner collided with two opponents contesting his shot attempt. Villanova forward Kris Jenkins landed on Sumner’s head as he fell to the ground, and Sumner appeared to be unconscious on the court. He eventually regained consciousness and the ability to move his extremities, but was placed on a stretcher and strapped down before being taken off the court.
Sumner was taken to the hospital for evaluation and released Thursday afternoon. Head coach Chris Mack tweeted that Sumner was able to fly home with the team. Mack later said that Sumner was walking and talking, but “has a tremendous headache.”

On Friday, Mack told reporters that Sumner did not sustain a concussion. Although the redshirt freshman did not practice on Friday, Mack did not rule him out of Xavier’s game against Butler on Saturday.
Sumner has been a catalyst for Xavier’s offense this season, averaging 11.7 points and 3.3 assists per game.
The No. 6 Musketeers lost their first game of the season, falling 95–64 to the No. 16 Wildcats.
