Toledo DC Jon Heacock to have same job at Iowa State

Toledo defensive coordinator Jon Heacock will have the same job under Iowa State coach Matt Campbell, according to sources.

It’s a reuniting of Heacock and Campbell, who previously worked together at Toledo. has been the Rockets’ defensive coordinator the past two seasons as well as safeties coach.

Under Heacock, Toledo is 21st in the FBS this season in scoring defense (20.8 points per game). Prior to joining the Rockets, he was Purdue’s defensive backs coach for a season, Kent State’s defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach from 2010–12 and Youngstown State’s coach from 2001–09.

The 55-year-old Heacock had a 60–44 record at Youngstown State. He was promoted to coach after a year as defensive coordinator. He was also the Penguins’ defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1992–96 after coaching the program’s defensive backs in 1991.

Heacock also served as Indiana’s defensive coordinator from 1997–99 and got his first full-time assistant job at Army in 1990. He was a graduate assistant at Michigan from 1988–89 following three seasons as West Liberty’s defensive coordinator, defensive line coach and defensive backs coach.

He was an assistant Steubenville (Ohio) High in 1984 and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Toledo in 1983. A Beloit, Ohio, native, he played football at Muskingum.

The highly regarded Campbell became Iowa State’s coach last month after a 35–15 record in four seasons at Toledo, which includes a 10–2 mark this year. He replaces Paul Rhoads, who was fired last month amidst a 3–9 campaign. Rhoads had a 32–55 record in his seven seasons with the Cyclones.
