Matthews joins Coastal Carolina as defensive coordinator

(STATS) - Former James Madison head coach Mickey Matthews has been named the new defensive coordinator at Coastal Carolina.

Chanticleers coach Joe Moglia confirmed the hiring to The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Sunday.

Matthews went 109-71 in 15 seasons at James Madison, winning the FCS national title in 2004 as well as national coach of the year honors in 1999 and 2008. He has been out of coaching the last two seasons.

Coastal Carolina will play its final season at the FCS level as an independent this year before joining the FBS as a member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2017.
