Iowa knocks off another ranked opponent with win over No. 14 Purdue
Iowa’s strong start to the Big Ten campaign continued Saturday, as the Hawkeyes pulled out a 70-63 road win over the No. 14 Purdue Boilermakers following their upset of No.1 Michigan State on Tuesday.
After a 16–0 first-half run spotted Purdue an early lead, things fell apart for the Boilermakes in the second half. Iowa erased a 17-point halftime deficit, capitalizing on turnovers and getting some timely three-point shooting from Anthony Clemmons. Iowa took the lead with 7:33 left in the second half on a three by Dom Uhl and never trailed after that, effectively employing a full-court trap and forcing 10 turnovers in the half.
Jarrod Uthoff led the Hawkeyes with 25 points, shooting 7–16 from the floor, making 10 of 14 free throws and scoring 16 in the first half. Peter Jok was Iowa’s only other scorer in double figures. The win was Iowa’s first over Purdue in West Lafayette since Feb. 1, 2006.
Not a single one of Purdue’s starters registered in double figures, with Kendall Stephens (12 points) and A.J. Hammons (11 points) pacing it off the bench. The Boilermakers shot just 39% from the field and turned the ball over 14 times.
Iowa moves to 11–3 (2–0 Big Ten), while Purdue falls to 13–2 and 1–1 in conference play.
