Ex-Troy DC Jeremy Rowell expected to be new Georgia Southern DBs coach

Colquitt County (Ga.) High defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell is expected to be the new defensive backs coach for Georgia Southern coach Tyson Summers, according to sources.

It would be a reunion of Rowell and Summers. Summers was a defensive backs graduate assistant at Troy in 2004 when Rowell was the Trojans’ defensive backs coach.

This past season was Rowell’s first as defensive coordinator for Colquitt County, which won its second straight state title behind back-to-back undefeated seasons. Before that, Rowell was Colquitt County’s safeties coach and special teams coordinator for two seasons.

He was Troy’s defensive coordinator from 2005 through 2012 after coaching the Trojans’ defensive backs for six seasons. He’s a former standout quarterback for Troy, which he led to a 19–3 regular season record as a starter from 1994–95.

Rowell joins the high-energy Summers, who was hired as Georgia Southern’s coach last month after being Colorado State’s defensive coordinator this past season. The Eagles had an impressive 9–4 record this season and won last month’s GoDaddy Bowl with a jaw-dropping 58–27 rout of MAC champion Bowling Green.

Summers replaces Willie Fritz, who became Tulane’s coach last month after posting a 17–7 record in his two seasons with the Eagles. Last season, he led them to the Sun Belt title and was the league’s coach of the year.
