Clemson redshirt freshman receiver Hunter Renfrow wasn’t a household name before Monday’s national championship game against Alabama, but he burst on the scene with two touchdowns in the first quarter.

Deshaun Watson found Renfrow for a 31-yard score to tie the game and for an 11-yard touchdown on the Tigers’ next drive.

Renfrow, a former walk-on majoring in engineering, redshirted as true freshman last season and was awarded a scholarship in August. SI’s Lindsay Schnell profiled him back in September

A star high school baseball player, Renfrow had scholarship offers to play baseball in college and turned down football scholarships from FCS programs for the chance to walk on at Clemson.

“He is fast and explosive and just a very instinctive football player, great change of direction and excellent ball skills,” head coach Dabo Swinney told The State in October. “And he’s our backup punter, too, don’t forget about that.”
