Southern U holds on to beat Alabama State 73-69

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Trelun Banks scored 21 points and Southern held on to beat Alabama State 73-69 on Saturday night for its fifth straight win.

Jared Sam added 15 points and Adrian Rodgers had 11 for the Jaguars (13-7, 5-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who are 7-0 at home.

Jamel Waters scored 22 points for Alabama State (6-12, 1-5). Tony Armstrong had 12 points and Corvon Butler 11.

Waters forced a turnover then scored a layup to give Alabama State its last lead, 66-65 with 3:34 remaining. Rashad Andrews had a layup, Banks hit a 3-pointer and Sam made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Jaguars a 71-66 lead with 1:16 left.

Torloft Thomas made a free throw, and then had a steal which led to Terrance Leflore's layup, pulling Alabama State to 71-69 with a minute left. The Hornets missed their next four shots, and Rodgers had a dunk to seal it.
