VanBeck takes over in 2nd OT, Houston beats ECU 97-93

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) Rob Gray Jr. scored 31 points in regulation and Wes VanBeck added 11 points during two overtimes and Houston beat East Carolina 97-93 on Saturday.

Houston led by eight points with three minutes left in regulation before East Carolina closed on a 9-1 run. The Cougars' Devonta Pollard missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 35.3 seconds left and ECU's Caleb White sank a 3-pointer from the wing to tie it at 75-all. Houston played for the final shot but turned it over.

Houston's Galen Robinson Jr. missed a 3 pointer with three seconds left in the first overtime and Damyean Dotson's grabbed the offensive rebound but his jumper was short.

VanBeck scored seven of Houston's first nine points of the second overtime for a 93-91 lead. He added a free throw with three seconds left for a two-possession game.

Dotson added 23 points and 13 rebounds for Houston (15-6, 5-4 American).

B.J. Tyson scored 20 points for East Carolina (10-12, 2-7).
