Texas Southern edges Alabama State 75-72

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Derrick Griffin scored 19 points with 15 rebounds and four blocked shots and Texas Southern held off a late surge to edge Alabama State 75-72 on Saturday to stay undefeated in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Texas Southern (9-11, 8-0) led by six with 29 seconds to go, but Terrance LeFlore made a layup, and after a turnover Jamel Waters nailed a 3-pointer to draw Alabama State to within one, 73-72, with 15 seconds remaining.

The Hornets put David Blanks on the line, and he made a pair to make it a 3-point game. On the next possession, Alabama State's Steve Rogers missed a 3-pointer and Corvon Butler grabbed the rebound, but his follow-up was blocked by Griffin and the Hornets ran out of time.

Alabama State (6-14, 1-7) was led by Waters with 18 points and eight assists. Butler finished with 15 points and a career-high 14 boards.
