Safety Brandon Jones commits to Texas on National Signing Day

Five-star safety recruiting Brandon Jones committed to Texas on National Signing Day.

The top safety prospect in the country revealed his college decision on National Signing Day. Five-star Brandon Jones announced that he will attend Texas.

Jones’s recruitment boiled down to a battle between three high-profile programs from the state of Texas. Earlier this week he released a list of three schools: Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M, which followed the release of a top 10 in December that also included Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC, Oklahoma and Florida State. In the end, Jones went with the Lone Star State’s flagship university.

The No. 1 safety and No. 19 player in the class of 2016, according to Scout.com, Jones marks a huge recruiting victory for Texas coach Charlie Strong. He was part of a group of prospects the Longhorns were aiming to land on Signing Day, in addition to four-star defensive tackle Jordan Elliott, four-star outside linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch and four-star inside linebacker Dontavious Jackson, among others. His addition will significantly elevate a class that entered Wednesday ranked 20th in Scout.com’s team ratings.

Listed at 6’0”, 190 pounds, Jones is renowned for his physicality and versatility. “It's no secret as to why colleges want Jones,” notes his Scout.com evaluation. “He can tackle, cover ground and at times make the big play in the pass game or in run support. On tape, he shows a wide array of skills. He is very aware and has a physically imposing presence. He plays under control, limiting mistakes.”
