Ex-Texas A&M OC Jake Spavital expected to become Cal OC
Former Texas A&M offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital is expected to be the new offensive coordinator for California coach Sonny Dykes, according to sources.
One of college football's brightest young offensive minds, the 30-year-old Spavital and Texas A&M decided to mutually “part ways” last month, but he had two guaranteed years still remaining on his contract. Spavital interviewed recently with Dykes and had also received NFL interest, according to sources.
Spavital would replace former California offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tony Franklin, who resigned last month to become Middle Tennessee State's offensive coordinator. Spavital had been the Aggies' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the past two seasons.
Before that, he was the program's co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for a season, working with Johnny Manziel. That was after two seasons as West Virginia's quarterbacks coach, including tutoring Geno Smith in 2011.
Spavital was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State in 2010, a graduate assistant at Houston in ’09 and an offensive quality control assistant at Tulsa in ’08. A Tulsa, Okla., native, he was a quarterback and punter at Missouri State from ’06–07.
He would have to find a new starting quarterback at Cal with star passer Jared Goff opting to forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft. The Golden Bears went 8–5 this past season, their best record in Dykes’s tenure, and beat Air Force 55–36 in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Dykes has a 14–23 record in his three seasons at Berkeley.
