Iowa State has suspended forward Jameel McKay indefinitely, the school announced Friday.

McKay did not travel with the Cyclones for their game at Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon, the Ames Tribunereports. McKay told the Tribune in a text that the punishment was “practice related” and that he believed he would miss just one game.

“Indefinitely sounds harsh because it’s one game,” McKay told the Tribune, “so I’m not sure why they would use that wording.’

Iowa State says the suspension does not stem from any legal issues.

McKay, a starting post player, was last season’s Big 12 defensive player of the year. The fifth-year senior has averaged 12.4 points, nine rebounds and 1.7 blocks for Iowa State this season.

The Cyclones are 16–6 and 5–4 in the Big 12 after losing consecutive games to West Virginia and Texas A&M. Deonte Burton will replace him in the starting lineup on Saturday.
