Garrett scores 29 points; Rhode Island beats La Salle 79-62

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Jarvis Garrett scored 19 of his career-high 28 points in the second half to help Rhode Island pull away and beat La Salle 79-62 on Saturday night.

Garrett was 11 of 19 from the floor. Jared Terrell added 22 points for the Rams (13-10, 5-5 Atlantic 10), who shot 54 percent from the field. Nicola Akele had 15 points and Hassan Martin chipped in 14.

Johnnie Shuler and Cleon Roberts scored 15 points apiece to lead La Salle (5-16, 1-9).

It was tied at 29 at halftime. Rhode Island opened the second half with a 22-7 run and led 51-36 with 11:44 to play.

Garrett scored 13 of the Rams first 28 points after the break and the score was 57-42 with 9:24 to play.

A 7-0 spurt pulled the Explorers to 59-49. Garrett answered with a layup, and Terrell made consecutive 3s to push the Rams lead to 67-51 with 4:20 remaining.
