Norfolk State slips past Maryland-Eastern Shore 76-70

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) Jeff Short scored 17 and Jonathan Wade hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to help Norfolk State slip past Maryland-Eastern Shore 76-70 Monday night.

D'Shon Taylor and Jordan Butler each had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Zaynah Robinson added 12 points and five assists for Norfolk State (12-13, 8-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).

Devin Martin hit a 3-pointer to give UMES a 63-57 lead with six minutes to play.

Butler converted a pair of conventional 3-point plays to spark a 13-1 run by the Spartans that made it 70-64 with 1:15 left.

Dominique Elliott made a layup, and then two free throws to pull the Hawks within two 32 seconds later.

Taylor missed the second of two free throws on the other end but UMES lost the rebound out of bounds and Wade's two foul shots made it a two-possession game.

Martin led the Hawks (8-17, 5-5) with 20 points. Dontae Caldwell scored 18 and Elliott had 13 with 12 rebounds.
