UC Irvine pulls away in 93-84 win over Cal State Northridge

Irvine, Calif. (AP) Alex Young scored a career-high 36 points with 14-for-19 shooting to propel UC Irvine to a 93-84 win over Cal State Northridge on Saturday night.
Young hit 4 of 7 from 3-point range, 4 of 6 from the line and became the first Anteater since 2003 to score 30 points in a game. Mamadou Ndiaye added 14 for Irvine (19-7, 8-2 Big West).
Leading 39-35 at the break, Irvine opened the second half with a 14-2 run to break open a 53-37 lead with 16:35 left. Young had 10 points in the run, Mike Best hit a jumper and Ndiaye slammed in a dunk to cap it.
Irvine shot 55 percent from the field and held a 49-37 rebounding advantage to bounce back from Thursday's loss to Hawaii.
Kendall Smith led CSUN (9-16, 4-7) with 21 points, Jerron Wilbut had 19 and Aaron Parks 14. Tre Hale-Edmerson had 10 rebounds.
