Vanderbilt’s Rod Chance will be new DBs coach at Southern Utah
Vanderbilt defensive quality control coach Rod Chance will be the new defensive backs coach for Southern Utah coach Demario Warren, according to a source.
This past season was Chance’s third at Vanderbilt. He did a Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Tennessee Titans in the summer of 2014.
The bright Chance was initially an offensive quality control coach under then Vanderbilt coach James Franklin in 2013 before moving to defensive quality control under current Commodores coach Derek Mason the last two years. Prior to his time in Nashville, Chance coached cornerbacks at his alma mater, Rhode Island, during the spring of 2013.
Chance was an assistant at Alpharetta (Ga.) High from 2009–12, working as special teams coordinator as well as coaching the program’s defensive backs and wide receivers. A Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product, he was a cornerback at Rhode Island from 2001–05 after a standout career at St. Thomas Aquinas High.
Southern Utah had an 8–4 record this past season and won the Big Sky championship under former coach Ed Lamb, who left in December to become an assistant at BYU. Warren was promoted to succeed Lamb last month after being an assistant the past eight seasons, including the last two as defensive coordinator.
