UNLV DL coach Joe Seumalo accepts same position at Arizona State
UNLV defensive line coach Joe Seumalo has accepted the same position under Arizona State coach Todd Graham, according to sources.
This past season was Seumalo’s first at UNLV. Prior to that, he was Oregon State’s defensive line coach for nine seasons.
Seumalo replaces former Arizona State defensive line coach Jackie Shipp, who left earlier this month for the same position at Missouri.
While at Oregon State, Seumalo helped develop future NFL defensive tackle Stephen Paea and defensive end Scott Crichton.
A strong recruiter, Seumalo was San Jose State’s defensive line coach in 2005 and coached the same position at Cal Poly from 2001-04. He was a graduate assistant coaching defensive ends and assisting with special teams at his alma mater, Hawaii, from 1999 through 2000.
In 1999, he served as a guest coach for the Indoor Professional Football League’s Hawaii Hammerheads. That was after five years as an assistant at Kaiser High in his native Honolulu, a stint that also included being a guest coach for the CFL’s British Columbia Lions in 1996.
Seumalo was a defensive lineman for three CFL teams and NFL Europe’s Rhein Fire. He played for Hawaii from 1985-88.
Arizona State posted a 6-7 record this season, the first losing campaign of Graham’s four-year tenure after back-to-back 10-wins seasons. He has a 34-19 record with the Sun Devils.
