James "J-Byrd" Daniel III scores 38, Howard edges UMES 77-74

WASHINGTON (AP) James ''J-Byrd'' Daniel III scored 38 points, hitting 16 of 23 free throws, and Howard beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 77-74 Tuesday night.

Daniel, a junior, became the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,755 points - topping Aaron Shingler (1,724) from 1963-67.

Daniel was 10 of 19 from the field as Howard made 51 percent of its shots.

Maryland-Eastern Shore had a 2-0 lead - its largest of the game - before Daniel scored the next eight points and Howard led by as many as 11 on a Daniel free throw with 9:24 remaining in the game. He scored 11 of Howard's first 15 points and had 22 at the break.

Devin Martin pulled Maryland-Eastern Shore within 74-71 with 18 seconds left but Tyler Stone went 3 for 4 at the line on Howard's next two possessions to ice it.

Stone finished with 12 points and Damon Collins 11 for Howard (11-15, 5-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).

Martin finished with 26 points and Dominique Elliott had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Maryland-Eastern Shore (8-19, 5-7).

The teams combined for 77 free-throw attempts - with 49 makes - and totaled 39 turnovers.
