Armstrong, Butler lead Alabama State over Southern 77-68

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Tony Armstrong scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Alabama State beat Southern 77-68 on Saturday night.

Corvon Butler had 19 points to lead Alabama State (10-15, 5-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) which has won two straight. Jamel Waters added 12 points for the Hornets.

Adrian Rodgers scored 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting to lead Southern (18-9, 10-4). Christopher Hyder had 13 points and Trelun Banks added 12. Jared Sam had 12 rebounds and chipped in nine points for the Jaguars.

It was tied at 33 with two minutes left in the first half. The Hornets closed on a 6-0 spurt and led 39-33 at halftime. Alabama State opened the second half on a 13-8 surge to stretch its lead to 52-41 and had a double-digit lead for nearly the rest of the way.
