Alcorn State tops Southern 70-56 to keep pace in SWAC

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) Octavius Brown scored 13 points and Alcorn State beat Southern 70-56 on Saturday night to keep pace in the Southwestern Athletic Conference race.

DeAndre Davis added 12 points with seven rebounds and Devonte Hampton had 11 points for Alcorn State (14-13, 12-4), which led by seven points at halftime.

The Braves sit alone in second place - a half-game ahead of Jackson State. Texas Southern (14-1) clinched a share of the SWAC regular-season title after beating Alabama A&M 77-54 Saturday.

Adrian Rodgers led Southern (18-11, 10-6) with 17 points. Shawn Prudhomme added 13 points and Christopher Hyder 11. The Jaguars made 7 of 13 from distance but only shot 37 percent from the field in the second half to extend their losing skid to three games.
