Ohio State offensive graduate assistant Matt Merritt will be the new running backs coach for Ohio Dominican coach Kelly Cummings, according to a source.

This past season was Merritt's third at Ohio State and first as a graduate assistant. He was instrumental in Braxton Miller's transition to wide receiver from quarterback in 2015.

Before that, the bright Merritt was an assistant running backs coach intern for two seasons under then-Buckeyes running backs coach Stan Drayton, who now has the same position with the NFL's Chicago Bears. Merritt worked with former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott, who is projected to be a first-round pick in April's NFL Draft.

Merritt also helped the Buckeyes win the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2014.

He was running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator at St. Charles Preparatory in Bexley, Ohio, from 2011-12, and served as wide receivers coach at his alma mater, Capital University, in 2010. A Frankfurt, Germany native, he was a running back and wide receiver for Capital from 2006-09 after graduating from Indian Hill High in Cincinnati.

Ohio Dominican had an 8-3 record this past season. Cummings became the program's coach in late January after serving the last three seasons as defensive coordinator, a role he will continue to hold.
