Hampton clinches MEAC title in 79-65 win over Delaware St

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Quinton Chievous scored 29 points and Hampton came back from a four-point halftime deficit to earn a comfortable 79-65 win over Delaware State on Monday night.

The win clinches outright MEAC title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the Pirates.

Chievous finished an efficient 13 of 17 from the field and added 14 rebounds. Brian Darden added 15 points for Hampton (18-9, 13-2), which has won five straight.

DeAndre Haywood led Delaware State (7-23, 5-10) with 18 points. Devin Morgan Jr finished with 11 for the Hornets, who have followed up their season long three game win streak by losing three in a row.

Delaware State led 35-31 after one half. But the Pirates responded in the second, taking the lead for good on a Chievous layup with 8:23 left which was part of a 13-2 run. The Hornets never got back within six points.
