Baylor basketball’s Rico Gathers will play football at Baylor next year instead of trying to break into the NFL, reports John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Gathers told ESPN’s Adam Schefter last week that he was switching from basketball to football with the hope of playing in the NFL. He had been planning on holding a private workout for NFL teams because a basketball tournament will keep him from participating in Baylor’s Pro Day.

Now, McClain reports Gathers has decided he wants to gain some experience at tight end in college before aiming for the NFL.

Gathers, 21, has played in 136 basketball games over four years at Baylor, averaging 8.6 points and 22.2 minutes per game. He has not played football competitively since he was 14 years old.
