Alcorn State beats Prairie View 81-64

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) Devonte Hampton scored 20 points, Octavius Brown added 15 more and Alcorn State cruised to an 81-64 win over Prairie View A&M on Thursday night to take sole possession of second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

DeAndre Davis had 13 points for Alcorn State (15-13, 13-4) and Tamarcio Wilson 11. The Braves shot 51 percent from the field (26 of 51) and controlled the glass 47-26 to pick up their seventh win in the past eight games.

Brown opened the game with a dunk to spark a 10-1 run and Alcorn State never trailed. In the second half, the Braves took their largest lead of the game with a bucket from Marquis Vance to make it 75-47 with 2:53 to play.

Jayrn Johnson paced Prairie View (6-23, 6-11) with 17 points, Karim York had 11 and Tevin Bellinger 10.

Jackson State fell to third place in the conference Thursday following its loss to Alabama State.
