Prairie View rolls to 79-71 win over Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Jayrn Johnson scored 20 points, Ja'Donta Blakely added 18 while grabbing nine rebounds and Prairie View rolled to a 79-71 win over Southern in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday.

Tevin Bellinger contributed 15 points for Prairie View (7-23, 7-11 Southwestern Athletic Conference) and Karim York had 11. The Panthers hit 28 of 51 from the field (55 percent) and went 7 for 13 from long range.

Prairie View took the lead for good with a 3-pointer from Johnson that sparked a 9-2 burst and made it 18-12 midway through the first half. Southern (19-2, 11-7) chipped away, tying the game at 42 early in the second half on Christopher Hyder's free throw. But the Panthers responded with a 20-3 run and hung on down the stretch.

Trelun Banks led Southern with 17 points, Shawn Prudhomme added 15, Jared Sam had 12 and Adrian Rodgers 10.
