Early matchups highlight Mercer schedule

(STATS) - A season-opening matchup with one of the defending Southern Conference champs helps highlight Mercer University's 11-game 2016 schedule which was announced Monday.

The Sept. 1 game against The Citadel - originally scheduled for Sept. 3 - is among Mercer's five home games. The Bears will also host SoCon opponents Western Carolina (Oct. 15), East Tennessee State (Nov. 5, Homecoming) and Furman (Nov. 19) as well as Tennessee Tech (Sept. 17) from the Ohio Valley Conference.

The road portion of Mercer's schedule includes a meeting with Georgia Tech (Sept. 10) and a SoCon game against Chattanooga (Oct. 8), which has won at least a share of three straight conference titles. Coach Bobby Lamb's squad upset the Mocs last season in Macon, Georgia.

Mercer, which enters its fourth season since returning to football, was 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the SoCon last year.
