Samford sets 2016 course behind Hatcher, Hodges

(STATS) - Samford hopes emerging quarterback Devlin Hodges can build on last year's late-season success and help the Bulldogs contend for the Southern Conference championship this year in coach Chris Hatcher's second season.

The Bulldogs finished 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the SoCon last year, when Hodges came on strong in the second half of the season and made the conference's all-freshman squad. Wide receiver Kelvin McKnight was named the conference's freshman of the year.

This year, Samford will play five home games, including the opener Sept. 1 against Mars Hill. Within the SoCon, the Bulldogs will host Wofford (Oct. 1), VMI (Oct. 15), Western Carolina (Oct. 22) and Mercer (Nov. 12, Homecoming).

The road portion of the schedule consists of out-of-conference visits to Central Arkansas (Sept. 10) and Mississippi State (Oct. 29) and trips to SoCon members Chattanooga (Sept. 24), Furman (Oct. 8), The Citadel (Nov. 5) and East Tennessee State (Nov. 19).

Chattanooga and The Citadel shared last year's conference title.
