Maryland defensive coordinator Scott Shafer has stepped down as the team’s defensive coordinator for personal reasons, Maryland head coach DJ Durkin announced.

“I want to thank DJ Durkin for the opportunity to be on his staff, but at this time I feel it’s best to step aside to tend to personal matters,” Shafer said in the release.

Shafer, 49, joined the Terrapins' staff on December 9 after serving as the head coach at Syracuse from 2013 to 2015. He signed a three-year deal with Maryland worth $2.25 million that included $65,000 in potential bonuses.
