North Carolina head coach Roy Williams allowed his emotions to show in a postgame interview following the Tar Heels' heartbreaking defeat at the buzzer to Villanova in the national championship game Monday.
Speaking to Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports, Williams talked about how difficult the loss was.
“You know Tracy I've been a head coach for 28 years and the worst thing is in a loss like I feel so inadequate because I don't know how to make it better,” Williams said. “I'm really proud of my team but you have to congratulate Villanova. They really did some things that hurt us early in the second half and we made a great comeback, Marcus made an unbelievable shot, but we left too much time. They had the ball last, Kris [Jenkins] made a big-time play for them, Ryan [Arcidiacono] did a good job of getting the ball to him. They're worthy champions, but I love the kids in that locker room.”
Villanova forward Kris Jenkins hit the game-winning three as time expired to give his team a 77–74 victory. The win is the second national title for Villanova, and its first since 1985.
The game marked North Carolina’s first appearance in the national championship game since it won the title in 2009.
