Memphis has hired Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith for its head coaching position, Gary Parrish of CBS Sports reports.

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman confirmed the report.

Smith will replace Josh Pastner, who accepted the head coaching job at Georgia Tech last week.

JOHNSON: Ten most surprising teams this season

Smith had coached at Texas Tech for three seasons, and led the Red Raiders to the NCAA tournament this year, where they were knocked out by Butler in the first round.

He led Texas Tech to a 46–50 record during his tenure there, and has a 557–276 overall record in 25 years of college coaching. Smith led Kentucky to a 1998 national title.
