Recently-fired Sacramento Kings coach George Karl has interest in the newly-open UNLV head coach opening, USA Todayreports.

With UNLV head coach Chris Beard—recently hired from Arkansas-Little Rock—set to depart for Texas Tech before ever coaching a game for the school, Karl, the fifth-winningest coach in NBA history, is reportedly in play to join the college ranks.

According to USA Today,UNLV reached out to Karl on Thursday night after learning of Beard’s pending departure, and the coach is now “making a push” for the job. Karl was officially dismissed by the Kings on Thursday following a tumultuous season in Sacramento. Other questions remain about Karl’s age (64) and health following two battles with cancer.

Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith left for Memphis after Josh Pastner was hired at Georgia Tech. Beard left to take his place just a week after taking the job at UNLV.
