Mississippi State guard Malik Newman has asked for his release and will transfer, according to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.

Newman is coming off a season in which he averaged 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He missed time due to a turf toe injury, cramps, a knee injury and back spasms.

Newman initially declared for the NBA draft before removing his name from consideration and electing to return to school.

Wherever Newman elects to play next, he will have three years of NCAA eligibility remaining but will have to sit out the 2016-17 season.

Newman was a highly-touted recruit out of Callaway High School in Jackson, Miss. He chose to play for the Bulldogs instead of considering offers to play overseas.
