Michigan-Notre Dame football rivalry series will resume in 2018

The Michigan-Notre Dame rivalry football series will resume in 2018 and 2019 with a home-and-home game series, the schools announced Thursday.
SI.com’s Ryan Krasnoo first reported news of the rivalry’s renewal.
Notre Dame will host Michigan in the season opener on Sept. 1, 2018, while the Wolverines will host the Fighting Irish on Oct. 26, 2019.
“The competition between Michigan and Notre Dame has created a fair, healthy and productive rivalry over time, and it brings out the best in both programs,” said Michigan had coach Jim Harbaugh. “We look forward to facing Coach Brian Kelly and the Irish in the coming years.”
The teams last faced off in 2014 when the Fighting Irish defeated Michigan 31–0. Dating back to 1887, the series has been played a total of 42 times.

The partnership ended after 2014, with Notre Dame citing the need to play more Atlantic Coast Conference teams. The three-year hiatus will be the longest for the rivalry since 1943 to 1978.
Michigan leads the series 24–17-1.
Michigan opens its 2016 season on Sept. 3 at home against Hawaii, while Notre Dame opens its season on Sept. 4 at Texas.
