Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin discussed his relationship with former quarterback Johnny Manziel with reporters at SEC Media Days on Tuesday.

When asked about Manziel, who has had numerous off-field issues over the course of his NFL career, Sumlin said he had texted with his former quarterback recently.

“He’s an Aggie, and he’s always going to be an Aggie,” Sumlin told reporters. “At Texas A&M, we take care of each other.”

Five little-known facts about the NFL’s drug policy

Sumlin was asked if he thought he could have done more to help Manziel while he was in college, but Sumlin was reportedly dodgy giving a response.

Manziel is currently a free agent and has supposedly been preparing to return to the NFL in 2016 after being released by the Browns in March. Since his release, he has been charged with misdemeanor assault in an incident involving his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley. He was also the victim of a hit-and-run crash.

Manziel’s father recently told ESPN that he hoped his son would spend time in jail.
