Nebraska plans to honor late punter Sam Foltz by naming a scholarship after him and adding an "SF27" helmet decal with his initials and number, the school announced Wednesday.

One of the school’s 85 football scholarships will be awarded in honor of Foltz, who died along with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler in a car crash July 23, awarded to a player who embodies “leadership, excellence in the community and in the classroom.”

The school will also rename the Hero Leadership award for student-athletes the “Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award.” Foltz was a recipient of the award in 2016 for his community service work.

The decal will be worn on team helmets and gameday gear.

"Sam was universally loved and respected by everyone he touched and on whom he had a positive influence each and every day,” Nebraska coach Mike Riley said in a statement following Foltz’s death. “His tragic loss is immeasurable to his family, his friends, his classmates, his teammates and his coaches and our thoughts and prayers are with all of them. The young men in our football program are hurting but I know that their strength of character and resolve will bring us together and we will honor Sam every day moving forward.”

Foltz was the Big Ten punter of the year last season.
