Four-star guard Alex O’Connell has committed to Duke, Evan Daniels and Brian Snow of Scout.com report.

O’Connell, a 6'6" shooting guard from Alpharetta, Ga., received an offer from Mike Krzyzewski and staff on Tuesday and made the verbal commitment on Wednesday.

“They checked all the boxes for me,” O’Connell said. “The basketball opportunity, it’s in the ACC and the coaching staff. My dad, Julian Barfield and I feel very comfortable and it’s like a home away from home. Playing for Coach K, the strength of schedule and the NBA exposure, Duke has it all.”

Scout.com rates O’Connell as the 62nd best player in the 2017 class.

O’Connell had offers from Louisville, Syracuse, Mississippi, Arizona State, Georgia and Georgia Tech, among others. He took an official visit to Louisville before pledging to Duke. He is the first commitment in Duke’s 2017 class.

O’Connell’s father played for Duke from 1973 to 1976, but he said that was not a factor in his choice.
