Evansville loses Simmons with season-ending knee injury

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) Evansville has lost three-year men's basketball starter Blake Simmons to a season-ending knee injury.

Coach Marty Simmons made the announcement about his son Wednesday, calling it a ''big loss.''

Since arriving on campus, the younger Simmons was averaging 7.4 points, 2.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds and started in 103 games. He made the Missouri Valley Conference's all-freshman team in 2013-14.

It's another blow for a team that lost top scorer D.J. Balentine and top rebounder Egidijus Mockevicius to graduation.

Simmons can redshirt and return for his final season in 2017-18, and his father's statement indicated that's what the Purple Aces intend to do.
