Platteville, Badgers game has extra meaning for Greg Gard

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsin will host Division III Wisconsin-Platteville in an exhibition game on Oct. 30 that will also serve to raise awareness about brain cancer, a year Badgers coach Greg Gard's father died of the disease.

The game will pit Gard against his brother, Jeff, who coaches Platteville.

Wisconsin announced plans for the exhibition game on Monday. This will be Greg Gard's first full season coaching the Badgers after the former assistant took over following Bo Ryan's abrupt retirement in December.

Gard said the game will celebrate the work conducted by doctors and researchers into finding a cure. It would also honor cancer victims.

Gard's father, Glen Gard, died on Oct. 30, 2015, six months after being diagnosed with cancer.
