Report: Texas football players threaten to boycott TCU game
Several Texas football players are threatening to boycott the team's season finale against TCU after reports surfaced that head coach Charlie Strong will be fired at the conclusion of the season, reports the Austin American-Statesman.
According to the report, the upperclassmen on the team are trying to intervene and calm the situation.
When asked about the reported boycott, Strong said it won't happen.
"They won't boycott this game," Strong said. "This game is about the seniors."
Multiple media outlets reported Sunday that Strong would be fired after three seasons at the school, but as soon as the news broke, school president Gregory L. Fenves said that any announcement about Strong's future would be made after Friday's game.
Strong's future at the school reached a head after Texas lost 24–21 to Big 12 bottom feeder Kansas, a game that broke the Jayhawks' 19-game conference losing streak. It was the Jayhawks first win over Texas since 1938.
During a press conference on Monday, Strong confirmed reports that a decision about his future will be made after the TCU game.
"Next year I want to come back," Strong said. "Wins and losses don't stack up. You're looking at a young football team."
Strong is 16–20 in his three seasons at Texas and if fired would be owed $10 million via buyout.
