Latest ACC recruiting news and notes: Elite DB Hunter prepares for first official visit

The latest ACC football recruiting news and notes.

Scout.com provides the latest recruiting news around the ACC.

Prospect of the week: Chase Monroe

It is hard to find a player with a better senior season than Davidson (N.C.) Day linebacker Chase Monroe. The Wake Forest commit finished with 204 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, and four forced fumbles. Monroe will compete for playing time as a true freshman and could become one of the team's best players quickly . He is the type of prospect who could help the Demon Deacons turn the corner in the ACC.

Visit of the week: Devon Hunter

Devon Hunter, who is considering AlabamaAuburnFloridaNorth Carolina and Virginia Tech, announced he would make his decision Christmas Eve. The Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River standout took an unofficial trip to Alabama for Saturday's Iron Bowl win against Auburn.

Hunter will head to North Carolina for his first official visit this weekend. The nation's No. 1 safety visited Chapel Hill several times, and the Tar Heels are actually the school closest to his home. The fact that he is visiting this close to his decision date shows his deep interest in North Carolina.

Virginia Tech still appears to be the favorite, but this is a huge visit and gives North Carolina a chance to make a big impression and gain momentum. If the trip goes well, the Tar Heels could emerge as a serious threat to the Hokies when decision time arrives next month.

Bowl Projections: Week 13's results shake up postseason picture

Prospect on the rise: Corey Gaynor

Corey Gaynor is committed to Minnesota, but he could be making a move to the ACC. The No. 20 offensive guard in the South was at Miami's game against Duke, and he left with an offer. Pittsburgh and West Virginia are on the Golden Gophers' offer list, but he called Miami his "dream school" and added "I love everything about Miami."

Underclassman of the week: Xavier Thomas

One of the top players in the 2018 class, Xavier Thomas, made news as he moved from ACC country to Florida's Gulf Coast. Thomas, the No. 5 player in his class and No. 2 defensive end, is transferring from Florence (S.C.) Wilson to Bradenton (Fla.) IMG.

Thomas has a bundle of offers, and a pair of ACC schools -- Clemson and Florida State  -- are doing well with him. He is also looking hard at AlabamaGeorgiaOhio State and South Carolina.

Commitment watch: Tyran Hunt

Courtland (Va.) Southampton offensive tackle Tyran Hunt named a top three of SyracuseVirginia and Maryland. He plans to take an official visit to Duke on Dec. 9. Maryland looks to be trending, but each of the aforementioned schools have a legitimate shot. Although Duke was not in his top three, the fact it will likely get the final official before he decides is significant. He has not set a date for his commitment, but expect it to come shortly after his visit to Duke.
