Indiana St. football coach resigns for 'special opportunity'

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) Indiana State football coach Mike Sanford resigned Friday to pursue what athletic director Sherard Clinkscales called a ''special career opportunity.''

There have been reports that he will join his son, also named Mike, at Western Kentucky. The younger Sanford was named Jeff Brohm's successor Tuesday.

Sanford went 18-30 record in four seasons with the Sycamores, leading Indiana State to the 2014 playoffs and the school's first postseason win since 1983. The Sycamores were 4-7 and 2-6 in the rugged Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2016.

The younger Sanford worked on Brian Kelly's staff at Notre Dame before leaving for Western Kentucky.

Clinckscales said Brian Cabral will serve as interim coach until a replacement found during a national search that has already begun.
