GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) No. 1 seed North Carolina (27-7) vs. No. 16 seed Texas Southern (23-11)

First round, South Region; Greenville, South Carolina; approximately 4 p.m. EDT.

BOTTOM LINE: The Tar Heels have talked all season about getting back to the NCAA title game after losing to Villanova on a last-second 3-pointer in their championship matchup last year. That journey starts Friday as they face the Southwestern Western Athletic Conference champion Tigers.

DAVIS' RETURN: Texas Southern is led by former Indiana coach Mike Davis, who guided the Hoosiers to the national-title game in 2002. Now in his fifth season, Davis guided the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015 before missing last season.

TOP PLAYERS: Both teams feature a conference player of the year. North Carolina's Justin Jackson is averaging 18.1 points after being named the top player in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Texas Southern's Zach Lofton (17.0 points) was the SWAC player of the year.

DID YOU KNOW: North Carolina has a No. 1 seed for a record 16th time, holds an NCAA record with 19 Final Fours and is second in all-time tournament wins to Kentucky (117).
