(STATS) - Portland State is turning its offense over to true freshman Jalani Eason.

Coach Bruce Barnum has named Eason as the starting quarterback for the Vikings' season opener against BYU on Aug. 26.

Eason, a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder from Gardena, California, offers a run-pass style, which fits Portland State's offense.

"Jalani's production, poise, mobility and playmaking ability have all been there throughout camp," Barnum said.

The decision keeps all-around threat Josh Kraght, who's played quarterback for the Big Sky program, at slot receiver. Last year's receptions leader will play a dual role as a backup signal caller.
