(STATS) - Sam Houston State postponed its Sunday night game against Richmond as Hurricane Harvey approached the Texas coast on Friday.

The No. 3 Bearkats were scheduled to host No. 7 Richmond at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville, which is located north of Houston and about 120 miles inland from the coastline in Galveston.

Officials from both schools are discussing a makeup date for the first-ever meeting between the national powers as well as television and streaming options, with an announcement to come at a later time. The game was originally scheduled for Aug. 31, but was moved up to Sunday to be broadcast on ESPNU.

Hurricane Harvey could increase to a Category 3 hurricane by the time it comes ashore Friday night or early Saturday and is expected to stall over the state, forecasters say.

"These storms can be difficult to predict and we want to have as much information as possible to make a decision," Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams said. "I want to thank everyone involved in this process as this is not an easy decision to make with all of the factors involved.

"Ultimately we need to do what was best for both teams' players and our fans who are traveling to the game."

Sam Houston said it will host its women's soccer game against Jackson State on Friday night, but canceled the team's game against Oral Roberts on Sunday morning.
