Two Ohio Valley Conference Teams Hung With SEC Teams

The SEC got off to a less-than-hot start on the second Saturday of the college football season.

Kentucky and Ole Miss both turned in sloppy first halves against schools from the football mega-powerhouse Ohio Valley Conference—Kentucky trailed Eastern Kentucky 13–10 at the break, while Ole Miss scored a late touchdown to take a 17–16 lead into the locker room after UT-Martin led for virtually the entire first half.

The Rebels quickly restored order with 21 points in the third quarter and ultimately cruised to a 45–23 win. The Wildcats had a little more trouble with Eastern Kentucky but pulled away in the fourth quarter thanks to a touchdown run by quarterback Stephen Johnson and a late field goal to secure a 27–16 win.

Kentucky closed as a 34.5-point favorite, and Ole Miss closed as a 32.5-point favorite. Both teams are predicted to finish in the bottom half of the SEC, and they’ll pay for those slow starts a little more heavily once conference play starts.
