The Utes (6–1, 3–1) are tied with USC for the division lead but must finish ahead of the Trojans after suffering a 30–23 road loss on Sept. 20. Utah has reeled off three straight wins since that defeat and is coming off a 21–3 victory over then-No. 17 Arizona State last Saturday.

The Utes' defense stifled the Sun Devils, allowing only 136 yards and eight first downs, continuing a superb run in which they have conceded 23 points and 666 yards in their three victories. That effort helped overcome four Utah giveaways, including three fumbles lost.

The Utes rank second in the nation in run defense, yielding 61.1 yards per game, fourth in the nation in total defense (252.1) and sixth in scoring defense at 11.7 points per game. Kyle Whittingham's team is also tied for 19th with 12 takeaways.

Zack Moss helped stabilize the offense with 99 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Moss, seeking his third straight 1,000-yard season, has three 100-yard games on the season and is third in the Pac-12 in rushing with 613 yards.

Despite throwing his first interception of the season, Tyler Huntley did enough to move the chains and completed 12 of 19 passes for 171 yards. Huntley has thrown for 1,564 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes.

The Utes, though, will meet a similarly stingy defensive team in Cal (4–3, 1–3), which is 20th in the nation in scoring defense (18.7), but struggling to gain any traction offensively with quarterback Devon Modster. The junior, who has been running the offense the past two-plus games after Chase Garbers suffered a shoulder injury, has led Cal to 34 points in 10 quarters during its three-game losing streak.

Modster completed 12 of 27 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's 21–17 loss at Oregon State. Modster did have his best rushing game of the season with 76 yards on 19 carries, as Cal finished with 282 yards, but was only 5 of 16 on third down.

The teams have split four games since Utah joined the Pac-12 in 2011, with Cal recording a 28–23 victory in the most recent meeting in 2016. The Utes, though, have won both games in Salt Lake City between the teams.
