Maryland Football Hires Kevin Sumlin As Co-Offensive Coordinator, per Report
Maryland is hiring Kevin Sumlin as their co-offensive coordinator for the 2023 season, Jeff Ermann of Inside Maryland Sports reports. He is also expected to serve as the team’s tight ends coach.
Sumlin has spent the majority of his career as college football coach, including 13 years as a head coach for Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona. He is most know for being the Aggies head coach when Johnny Manziel won the Heisman, as Sumlin led that program to six straight winning seasons.
However, his next stop at Arizona was disappointing as the Wildcats never reached .500 in three years with Sumlin.
After taking a year off from football, Sumlin was the general manager and head coach for the Houston Gamblers last spring, leading that team to a 3–7 record. The Gamblers have yet to announce who will replace Sumlin just days away from the start of the season.
Maryland is bringing Sumlin in to replace help Don Enos, who took the offensive coordinator job at Arkansas, and Mike Miller, who left to become Charlotte’s offensive coordinator. According to Ermann, it is not known who will also be co-offensive coordinator with Sumlin just yet.
Last year, Maryland ranked No. 55 in the country with 401.5 yards per game, and No. 67 with 28.2 points per game. Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa will return in 2023 for a final season, after finishing ’22 top three in yards per game and completion percentage among Big Ten quarterbacks.
