How TSU got here: The Tigers (14-20) clinched the program’s third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance on Saturday after defeating Grambling State for their third SWAC title in five seasons under coach Johnny Jones. TSU entered the SWAC tournament playing every part of the role of underdog after an 11–20 regular season, and went on to rattle off three straight wins to become the first No. 8 seed in conference history seed to win the tournament.

How FDU got here: A 17–14 season earned the Knights the No. 2 seed entering the Northeast Conference tournament. In search of its first NEC tournament title since 2019, Fairleigh Dickinson made it to the final against Merrimack but fell, 67-66, on March 7. Despite the defeat, FDU received the NEC’s automatic bid because Merrimack is transitioning to full Division I status. The Knights are making the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance since ’19 in coach Tobin Anderson’s first season.
