Memphis’s Shutes Charged With Assault After WNIT Postgame Altercation

Bowling Green Athletics announced the Bowling Green State University Police Department charged Memphis guard Jamirah Shutes with assault. On Thursday night, Shutes allegedly punched Bowling Green’s Elissa Brett after the Falcons’ WNIT victory over the Tigers. Brett, who was on the ground following the punch, is doing well, according to the school.

“Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well,” the school said in a statement, via WREG sports reporter Colin Cody. “This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor and no further comment is available at this time.”

It is still not clear what prefaced the incident or what was said beforehand that led to the altercation.

While Memphis’s season ended with the loss, Bowling Green will next face Florida in the WNIT’s Great Eight on Monday night. Brett’s status for that game is also unclear.
