Iowa OC Brian Ferentz Unsure of ’Notable Changes’ to Anemic Offense
Not a lot went right for Iowa’s offense in 2022.
The Hawkeyes ranked 123rd nationally in scoring offense (17.7 points per game) and second-to-last in total offense (251.6 yards per game), but somehow amassed an 8–5 record despite a decided lack of scoring. When offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz spoke to the media on Thursday and answered questions about what changes the unit would be making for the upcoming season, though, he offered some interesting responses.
Ferentz told reporters that he “doesn’t know that there are any notable changes to the offense,” per Eliot Clough of Rivals. When asked if he had message for fans who have grown impatient with the team’s offensive production, Ferentz declined to offer any words of encouragement.
Ferentz has been an assistant under his father, Kirk, at Iowa since 2012, and was elevated to the role of offensive coordinator in ’17. In his six seasons at the helm of the offense, the Hawkeyes have never ranked higher than 87th nationally in total yards per game, and three times have ranked outside the top 100. They’ve managed a top-50 scoring offense just twice, peaking at No. 40 in ’20.
The school gave Brian Ferentz a new contract this offseason, one that featured a $50,000 pay cut and performance incentives that include scoring an average of 25 points per game—a mark Iowa eclipsed just twice in 13 games last year.
